Tannat Across Texas: Newsom and Tallent

Enjoy a comparative vertical tasting of Tannat from Newsom in the High Plains and Tallent in the Hill Country, vintages 2016 through 2019.

Bending Branch Winery is the Tannat House of Texas. Bending Branch has been making High Plains Tannat from Newsom Vineyards since 2014, and Hill Country Tannat from Tallent Vineyards since 2016. Meet the growers at this special event and experience a comparative vertical tasting of Tannat wines from both Newsom and Tallent, vintages 2016 through 2019, plus a special tasting from the barrel. The event will be held in the barrel room at Bending Branch Winery. Bending Branch is excited to partner with The Texas Wine School to bring the Specialist of Texas Wine certification classes to Comfort, instructed by Dr. Russ Kane, award-winning Texas writer, author and wine aficionado.
Specialist of Texas Wine is a first-of-its-kind program that offers a comprehensive series of classes featuring the unique wines and wine regions of Texas. Never before has there been a wine program with specific classes focused solely on Texas.

Prerequisite: Must have completed Texas Wine Certification Class Level 1 to join.
Classes will be held at Ursa at Branch on High. Seating is limited.

Course highlights:

  • Texas’s timeline and more details on its transition from an early wine culture to a modern wine industry.
  • The details of T.V. Munson’s role in saving the European vineyards from the scourge of Phylloxera and his Texas native grape legacy that permeates rootstock selections worldwide to this day.
  • A “deeper dive” into Texas’s wine regions looking at the origins of its soils, climatic conditions (temperatures, typical weather events, precipitation, and potential effects of global warming), and remaining wine industry challenges including herbicides.
  • A penetrating look at the issues that differentiate warm growing regions like Texas from cooler growing regions and the critical differences important in varietal and blend selections, and winemaker decisions, and its wine styles.
  • A focus on starting a vineyard in Texas and considerations for opening and operating a Texas winery, including varietal selection, natural hazards, and economic analyses and considerations.
  • An archive of one-on-one videos with Texas growers, winemakers and winery owners discussing many of the topics that area presented in this course.
